BUHWEJU, UGANDA – As the 2026 elections approach, the Buhweju Woman Member of Parliament seat is widely expected to remain in the hands of Nnamara Annet Oyes Byamukama. Early polls put the NRM flagbearer at an overwhelming 85%, with her closest challenger, FDC’s Janefreda Bwiruka, at 12.1%. Independent candidate Ameria Kantona trails at 2.9%.
Hon. Byamukama, who secured the NRM nomination with a landslide 68% in the primaries, is projected to increase her margin in the general election. The withdrawal of former incumbent Hon. Oliver Koyechenga, who finished second in the primaries, further solidifies Byamukama’s position and unifies NRM support behind her.
A key factor in Byamukama’s popularity is her leadership of the Buhweju Community Transformation Initiatives (BCTI) since 2022. Under her stewardship, BCTI has implemented a range of successful development programs:

Agricultural Empowerment:
– Distribution of high-quality maize seeds to boost food security and incomes.
– Supply of over 500 piglets to community groups, fostering entrepreneurship.
– Support for tea and coffee farming, attracting factories and improving market access for local farmers.
Education and Talent Development:
– Sponsorship of football tournaments, uniting local youth and promoting talent.
– Payment of school fees for bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and support for school programs, including contributions to St. Joseph’s Primary School Kengyeya.
Wealth and Job Creation:
– Provision of over 5,000 chicks to enable income generation.
– Efforts to attract tea factories, creating a ready market for farmers.
– Initiatives estimated to create up to 49,000 jobs through the tea sector.
BCTI’s holistic approach, focusing on education, agriculture, and wealth creation, has brought tangible improvements to the lives of Buhweju residents. Byamukama’s commitment to sustainable community development continues to inspire strong support as she heads toward what is expected to be a decisive victory.
