Rukiga, Uganda – Rukiga District Police are investigating the death of 30-year-old Bright Hakiri, a bricklayer from Rushayo cell, Kiahaje parish, Bufundi sub-county, Rubanda district.
Hakiri was found dead at approximately 9 pm on May 25, 2025, in Rwakimuri cell, Nyakabungo parish, Bukinda sub-county, Rukiga district.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Hakiri and a suspect, Fortune Nkurunungi, had been working together laying bricks at a site owned by Evalisit Twebaze.
On May 24, 2025, at around 9 pm, Hakiri and Nkurunungi reportedly consumed alcohol at Ninsiima’s bar. A dispute arose concerning their payment, leading to a fight with sticks at their residence. On May 25, 2025, their manager discovered Hakiri unconscious. Despite a doctor being summoned, Hakiri was pronounced dead at the scene.
A murder investigation has been launched. Police have visited, processed, and documented the crime scene, recorded witness statements, and conducted a post-mortem examination.
The body has been released to the family for burial. Two suspects, Fortune Nkurunungi and Brian Twinamatsiko, have been arrested to assist with the investigation.
The Kigezi Police Spokesperson, Asp Elly Maate Kigezi Region confirmed the incident stressing that inquiries are still at hand.
