The successful conclusion of the 22nd AfWASA International Congress and Exhibition on February 20, 2025, in Kampala marks a defining moment for Uganda’s water and sanitation sector. This landmark event, which convened distinguished stakeholders from across the African continent and beyond, was not a happenstance but a product of relentless lobbying, strategic diplomacy, and visionary leadership.

At the epicenter of this remarkable achievement stands *Dr.Eng.Silver Mugisha*, the President of AfWASA, whose astute negotiation and unwavering commitment ensured that Uganda hosted this prestigious congress. His efforts not only amplified Uganda’s visibility on the continental stage but also unlocked a wealth of opportunities that will catalyze the transformation of our water and sanitation landscape.
Uganda’s selection as the host nation for this congress underscored the country’s growing influence in Africa’s water governance and infrastructure development. The high-level deliberations, policy exchanges, and technological exhibitions that characterized the event brought Uganda to the forefront of innovative water management and sustainable sanitation practices. Beyond the prestige, the congress left an indelible impact—enhancing technical capacity, fostering strategic partnerships, and attracting vital investments into Uganda’s water and sanitation sector.
Suffice to note, this congress served as an intellectual crucible, where experts dissected contemporary challenges, including climate-induced water scarcity, financing mechanisms for sustainable water projects, and the integration of cutting-edge technology in service delivery. The resolutions forged therein will provide Uganda with a robust blueprint for fortifying water resilience, improving sanitation infrastructure, and expanding access to clean water, particularly in underserved communities.
The economic dividends of hosting such a high-caliber event cannot be overstated. The influx of international delegates translated into significant revenue for Uganda’s hospitality and tourism sectors, with hotels, transport services, and local enterprises reaping substantial benefits. More importantly, the congress positioned Uganda as a hub for future international engagements in water and sanitation governance, further strengthening its diplomatic and economic standing.
As a Ugandan who is deeply passionate about water and proper sanitation, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to Eng. Silver Mugisha for his instrumental role in bringing this congress home. His dedication to the sector is not only commendable but also a testament to the power of visionary leadership in driving meaningful progress.
Uganda must now seize this momentum to implement the commitments made during the congress, ensuring that the dialogues translate into tangible improvements in service delivery, infrastructure development, and policy reform. With leaders like Eng. Silver Mugisha at the helm, I am confident that Uganda’s water and sanitation sector is poised for unprecedented growth, resilience, and sustainability.
End.
