FORT PORTAL, UGANDA – Police in Rwenzori East Region have urged residents and football fans to remain vigilant as the World Cup season begins, warning of potential security and public health risks associated with mass gatherings.
In a statement, Rwenzori East Police spokesperson ASP Maate Elly said excitement around the tournament must be balanced with caution. He noted risks including possible terror threats, violence in crowded spaces, and safety hazards that can arise quickly in large gatherings.
Police are advising that matches be shown in enclosed venues with access control and designated emergency exits. Venue owners have been asked to conduct mandatory searches, deny entry to anyone carrying concealed items, and work closely with security agencies to report suspicious behavior or objects immediately.

Fans have also been told to avoid leaving homes unattended during match times to reduce the risk of burglary, to travel in groups where possible, and to remain aware of their surroundings.
In light of the ongoing Ebola outbreak, organizers of public viewing venues are encouraged to set up handwashing facilities with clean water and soap at all entry points to protect public health.
ASP Maate said police are coordinating closely with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure a safe environment throughout the tournament.
