Mbarara,Uganda – The Catholic Church in Mbarara Archdiocese and beyond is mourning the death of veteran gospel music composer JB Kazoora, whose hymns have shaped Catholic liturgy across western Uganda.
Kazoora is widely regarded as one of the leading contributors to original Runyankole hymns used in the Mass. For decades, his compositions have been embraced by choirs and congregations, becoming central to worship in many parishes.
Among his most notable works is _Ekitiinwa Ayi Mukama_, a Runyankole version of the Gloria used during the introductory rites of the Mass. He also composed _Mukama Otusaasire_, a solemn Kyrie invoking God’s mercy, and _Nkwata Omukono Taata_, a hymn expressing surrender to Jesus Christ in times of hardship.

Other widely performed hymns include _Ai Mukama Wangye Ompindure Ekikwato_, inspired by the Prayer of St. Francis; _Ebirungi Byonkoreire Taata_ and _Ndyakusiima Nta_, both centered on thanksgiving; as well as _Mukama Ndinda_, a prayer for divine protection. His hymn _Tihariho Ndijo Owakubasa Kutujuna_ emphasizes faith in Christ as the only savior.
Church leaders and the faithful described Kazoora as a pillar of indigenous sacred music whose work strengthened the use of local language in Catholic worship.
Kazoora died on 4th May 2026, just days after celebrating the sacrament of Holy Matrimony on 25th April 2026.
Burial and funeral arrangements will be announced later.
