Kisoro, Uganda – In a significant breakthrough in the fight against a recent spate of armed robberies in Kisoro District, police have arrested two prime suspects and recovered a cache of stolen goods, including an AK-47 rifle. The joint intelligence-led operation, conducted late last night, led to the apprehension of Irankunda Gerard, alias Ndereya, and Habyarimana Vallence in Karumena and Kisoro Hill villages respectively.
The suspects, who confessed to involvement in at least four armed robberies in Mugombero Town Center, Natate, and Mutorole, were found in possession of an AK-47 rifle with a magazine and live ammunition, a pair of police khakis, and a pair of suspected police jungle boots. Police investigations reveal that Irankunda previously escaped from Ruti Police Station in Mbarara while under interrogation for similar offences.
ASP Maate Elly, Police Spokesperson for Kigezi, confirmed the arrests and stated that the operation is ongoing. “This significant breakthrough allows us to focus our efforts on apprehending remaining suspects and recovering further stolen property,” ASP Elly said. “We are committed to bringing these criminals to justice and ensuring the safety and security of the people of Kisoro.”

The arrests bring a welcome sense of relief to the community following a series of unsettling robberies. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be prosecuted in court.
