Rubirizi, Uganda – The Katerera Education Forum’s 4th annual celebration highlighted significant strides in improving education in Rubirizi District, according to attendees.
The forum, which brought together headteachers, teachers, parents, students, and political leaders, focused on addressing challenges that hinder academic achievement.
Reverend Father Dido Nsekanimanya Gilvas, the diocesan education secretary for Mbarara Archdiocese, urged parents to prioritize their children’s education, emphasizing the importance of parental involvement, love, and care in a child’s success.

He cited poverty, poor parenting, substance abuse, domestic violence, and school dropouts as key factors contributing to poor student performance. Father Dido also called for improved school monitoring and teacher professional development.
Zubair Muhwezi, chairperson of the Katerera Education Forum, reported a noticeable increase in academic performance in several primary and secondary schools since the forum’s inception. He attributed this to collaborative efforts to identify and address the root causes of poor performance, including school dropouts and early marriages.
Muhwezi highlighted the forum’s initiatives, which include distributing exam materials, providing bursaries for needy students, offering career guidance, and promoting mindset change. This year’s forum focused on “The Role of Stakeholders in Education Enhancement,” with over 45 schools in attendance.
Sheikh Kiseka Iddi, an education stakeholder, praised the forum’s impact on parental awareness regarding the importance of education.
He urged increased community support for school infrastructure development and intensified monitoring of teaching and learning. He also stressed the need to address domestic violence, a significant factor impacting student performance.
Asenath Bamureba Osiime, headteacher of Kirugu Secondary School (the event’s host), stated that the workshop aimed to assess student knowledge and skills, identify areas for improvement, and provide feedback to all stakeholders. She encouraged students to work harder and emphasized the crucial role of parental and community support in bridging educational gaps.
