KAMPALA, UGANDA
The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development has directed all Local Council I (LC I) Chairpersons who are currently participating in election campaigns to temporarily refrain from engaging in any land-related transactions until the electoral process is completed.
In a public notice dated 16th July 2026, the ministry said the precautionary measure is intended to protect the integrity of land transactions and minimize disputes, fraud, and other irregularities that may arise during the election period.

According to the notice, campaigning LC I Chairpersons should not participate in, witness, endorse, recommend, or oversee any land-related activities until the elections are concluded. The ministry explained that the directive is necessary because the election period may compromise impartiality in land administration.
Members of the public have also been advised to avoid relying on campaigning LC I Chairpersons for services involving the sale or purchase of land, witnessing or endorsing land agreements, boundary dispute resolution, land ownership verification, and any other land transaction requiring local administrative involvement.
The ministry further encouraged individuals with urgent land matters to seek assistance from qualified legal practitioners or use other lawful channels to process their transactions while the temporary suspension remains in force.
Officials emphasized that the measure is designed to prevent costly mistakes and protect the interests of all parties involved in land ownership and transactions.
The Ministry of Lands appealed to the public to remain patient and cooperate until the LC I election process is concluded, assuring citizens that normal administrative services involving elected LC I Chairpersons will resume after the elections.
The public notice was issued by the Communications Division of the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, which thanked the public for their understanding and cooperation.
