KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Electoral Commission (EC) has ruled that presidential aspirant Gen. Mugisha Muntu has failed to meet the legal threshold of supporters required for nomination. According to a letter dated September 19, 2025, the EC verified Muntu’s submitted lists and found that only 48 out of 98 districts met the required number of nominators.
The EC chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, informed Muntu that he has not complied with the Presidential Elections Act, which requires a candidate to present at least 100 registered voters from at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts. Muntu now faces a tight window to submit additional signatures before the nomination deadline on September 24, 2025.
This development comes after another presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine), faced a similar setback. Bobi Wine accused the EC of deliberately frustrating his bid and vowed to resubmit more signatures.
