Ann Ruyondo Lumumba has been declared the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Chairperson of the National Women’s Council after securing a decisive victory in the party’s internal elections.
Ruyondo Lumumba emerged the winner with 109 votes, defeating incumbent Farida Kibowa, who garnered 25 votes, in an electoral exercise presided over by the NRM Electoral Commission.
The election brought together NRM women leaders and delegates to select candidates who will represent the ruling party in the forthcoming Friday national elections.

In other positions, Hon. Agnes Kirabo was elected NRM flagbearer for Vice Chairperson after obtaining 81 votes. She defeated Janipher Kengaju Akiiki, who received 32 votes, and Sheebah Nagudi Muloni, who polled three votes.
Hope Nakunda was elected flagbearer for Secretary for Finance, while Among Shakila Mwenyi emerged as the party’s flagbearer for Secretary for Publicity.
NRM Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Tanga Odoi, who presided over the electoral exercise, commended the delegates for maintaining discipline throughout the voting process.
“I am happy that we have at last chosen leaders of your choice who will represent the NRM in the Friday national elections,” Dr Tanga said.
He urged all NRM members to rally behind the newly elected flagbearers as the party moves into the final phase of the electoral process.
“The NRM party will, with its full force, back our ticket holders at the national level to ensure we defeat the opposition candidates and the independents,” Tanga added.
Meanwhile, NRM Chairperson of the Women’s League Hon. Adrine Kobusigye congratulated the newly elected team, saying their victory gives them a mandate to represent women leaders within the party.
Kobusigye pledged her support to the new leadership and called on all contestants and their supporters to remain united following the internal elections.
She also cautioned unsuccessful candidates against contesting as independents or sponsoring independent candidates, saying such moves could undermine the party’s unity ahead of the national polls.
“I hope everyone is satisfied with the process and therefore nobody will come out to contest as independent or even sponsor one. Let us remain united and mobilise to pull off the final win on Friday. It will be a shame for someone who went through all this process to vie for independent,” Kobusigye said.
The election marks a significant step for the NRM Women’s League as the newly selected flagbearers prepare to carry the party’s banner into the national elections.
With the internal contest now concluded, party leaders have shifted their focus to mobilisation, unity and campaigning for the official NRM ticket holders ahead of Friday’s vote.
