EAST AFRICA – Civil society Organisations for Environmental conservation from Uganda and Tanzania have asked China government to withdraw from supporting the East African Crude Oil pipeline (EACOP) in order to save environment and socio-economic risks.
Addressing journalists at Najeera -kira division during a joint press, Brian Atuheire the executive Director for African Institute on Food security and Environment (AIFE) said they have already written to china’s president about the matter and they expect response by 10th/June/ 2024 before taking next course of action. On Monday 27th May 2024, they are going to Chinese embassy in Uganda to submit their petition on the same matter
“The construction of the ECOP projects threaten the safety and livelihoods of millions and through its inevitable exacerbation of the climate crisis ,poses a major risk to the security and stability of the entire region and the world” Atuheire says.

” EACOP projects are harming both ugandan and Tanzania communities, displaced families, human rights violations and they face financial hardships” he adds.
He says China’s potential support for EACOP project raises questions about president Xi’s commitment to cooperate with African countries to build an open and inclusive economy.
