KYAMUHUNGA,BUSHENYI – Hon. Tugabirwe Richard Kakoni has called on residents of Kyamuhunga Sub-county to place the future of their children and families above alcohol consumption.
Speaking during a community engagement (Baraza) in Manengo, Kakoni, together with sub-county leaders on Monday 7th September 2026, Hon. Kakoni warned that alcohol abuse is deepening poverty and breaking families.
“Alcohol should never become more important than the future of your children,” he told residents. “A family may be poor, but when parents work together, sacrifice and plan wisely, they can gradually improve their lives. However, when money meant for food, school fees, healthcare or family support is spent on alcohol, poverty becomes even deeper.”

He challenged parents to reflect on the value of their drinking, noting that every bottle bought when school fees are unpaid is money taken away from a child’s education, and every night spent drinking is time lost for family development.
Hon. Kakoni also strongly condemned domestic violence, saying it is never a solution to family problems.
“Beating, threatening, insulting or humiliating your wife, husband or children does not make you stronger. It destroys trust, damages children emotionally and can destroy the entire family,” he said.

He encouraged those struggling with alcohol to seek help from trusted family members, community and religious leaders, or professional services, and to avoid places and peers that encourage excessive drinking.
“To husbands and wives, talk before you fight. Discuss your income, children’s school fees, food, farming and debts together. Even a small income can make a difference when it is properly planned,” he added.
He concluded with a call to action: “Let us choose work over drunkenness, education over unnecessary spending, dialogue over violence, and family responsibility over temporary pleasure.”
