BUHWEJU – UGANDA
The Buhweju District Ankole Cup team has commenced its residential training camp at Buhweju Inn as preparations intensify for the ongoing 5th edition of the Ankole Cup tournament.
Speaking after the tournament’s opening match between Bushenyi and Sheema on Saturday, Buhweju Ankole Cup Team Coordinator Methodius SBK expressed gratitude to the district leadership and supporters who turned up in large numbers to witness the competition’s kickoff.

The opening fixture attracted football fans from across the Ankole sub-region, although the game ended without either side finding the back of the net.
Methodius commended Buhweju leaders and residents for their unwavering support, specifically recognizing Buhweju District Chairperson Atuhaire Deo, popularly known as Omuhatiizi, former Buhweju County MP Francis Mwijukye, Rwengwe Councillor Stuart, and the entire organizing committee for representing the district at the tournament opener in Bushenyi.
“As we return home, our residential camp begins today at Buhweju Inn, and we expect all players to have reported by midday,” Methodius said.
He also appealed to well-wishers and individuals who pledged financial support to fulfill their commitments, noting that the team continues to face financial challenges ahead of its campaign.
“We are still welcoming any kind of support because financially we are not yet stable,” he added.
The coordinator highlighted the youthful nature of the Buhweju squad, describing it as one of the youngest teams participating in this year’s tournament. The team comprises students drawn from various educational institutions, including St. Anthony Kyankanda, Mbarara High School, Citizens High School Isingiro, Ibanda University, and the University of St. Joseph, three graduates from Buhweju Community Transformation Initiatives Limited (BCTI) annual league among others.
He revealed that the team had hoped to include additional players from Jovoc and Kitovu schools, but some parents were reluctant to allow their children to participate.
Despite the challenges, Methodius expressed confidence in the team’s ability to compete for top honors.
“The only assurance I am giving you is that the trophy is coming home. Support and trust us, and we shall deliver,” he said.
The Ankole Cup, which brings together districts from across the Ankole sub-region, serves as a platform for nurturing football talent, promoting regional unity, and identifying promising players for higher levels of competition.
Buhweju’s supporters now await the team’s first match with optimism as the youthful squad seeks to make a strong impression in the tournament.
Buhweju district is to face Mitooma district on Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at Ruhiinda Secondary School playground in Mitooma.
