KAMPALA, UGANDA – Uganda’s government has debunked reports circulating on social media and online platforms claiming that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has imposed a visa ban on Ugandan citizens starting in 2026. Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vincent Bagiire, stated that no official communication had been received from Abu Dhabi regarding any suspension of tourist or work visas.
The UAE Ambassador to Uganda, Abdalla Hassan AlShamsi, reinforced Bagiire’s remarks, describing the reports as “false” and insisting that no new restrictions had been placed on Ugandan nationals. The clarification aims to alleviate concerns among Ugandan migrant workers and travelers who feared losing access to a key labor and business destination.
The reports had sparked panic in the travel and recruitment industry, particularly following a recent BBC investigation alleging a sex-trafficking ring in Dubai involving a Ugandan national. Lawmakers have since called for stricter oversight of labor export firms and stronger protections for citizens working abroad.

Uganda-UAE Relations:
The UAE is a significant trading partner for Uganda, with:
– Over 100,000 Ugandans employed in the UAE
– Gold exports exceeding $1 billion annually
– Emirati investment in energy infrastructure and the planned Kidepo International Airport
– Strong air connectivity, with Dubai among the busiest routes
The unverified reports could impact bookings on UAE-bound flights and affect business and tourism traffic.
