Bushenyi, Uganda – A 13-year-old student, Atwijukire Innocent, has died under suspicious circumstances in Bushenyi District, prompting a police investigation and a strong call for alternative disciplinary approaches.
Preliminary investigations suggest Innocent, a P5 student at Rwatukwiire Primary School, may have taken his own life after his mother confronted him at school over an alleged theft of 50,000 Ugandan shillings.
Authorities believe the incident occurred sometime between the evening of July 4th and the morning of July 5th. Following his mother’s accusation, the boy reportedly fled school, went into hiding, and was later found hanging from an avocado tree near his home in Rweibaare cell, Rwamabengwa ward, Central Division, Bushenyi Ishaka municipality.

Police are currently working to determine the exact cause of death and are committed to holding any responsible parties accountable. The body was transported to Kampala International University (KIU) Teaching Hospital mortuary in Ishaka for a post-mortem examination.
“We strongly urge parents and teachers to prioritize constructive and lawful methods of addressing children’s mistakes,” stated SP Apollo Tayebwa, Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson. “Excessive fear and pressure can have devastating consequences.” He emphasized the importance of exploring alternative disciplinary strategies to prevent future tragedies.
The case remains under active investigation by the Bushenyi District Police.
End.
