RUBIRIZI, UGANDA — The Woman Member of Parliament for Rubirizi District, Hon. Arinitwe Jeniva Nalongo, has issued a strong warning against corruption and misuse of government funds, particularly in the implementation of public projects across the district.
Hon. Nalongo raised concern over what she described as the misuse and wastage of taxpayers’ money through shoddy and substandard work on government projects. She cautioned contractors and technical staff entrusted with public resources to uphold professionalism, accountability and value for money when implementing government programmes.
The legislator said some government projects risk failing to deliver the intended services to communities when contractors compromise construction standards or when responsible officials fail to properly supervise and monitor the use of public funds.
She emphasized that taxpayers contribute money to government with the expectation that it will be translated into quality services and infrastructure. Any deliberate misuse of these resources, she noted, amounts to denying citizens the services they deserve.

Hon. Nalongo called upon security agencies and other relevant authorities to investigate cases of suspected corruption and take appropriate action against individuals found guilty of misusing government funds. She further urged authorities to ensure that culprits are required to refund public money lost through corruption, fraud or negligence, in accordance with the law.
The MP also commended the Rubirizi District leadership for conducting inspections of government projects, saying regular monitoring is critical to ensuring that projects are implemented according to approved standards and specifications.
She stressed that effective inspection and supervision can help identify poor workmanship, prevent unnecessary expenditure and ensure that government investments have a meaningful impact on local communities.
According to Hon. Nalongo, transparency should remain at the centre of government project implementation, from the procurement and contracting stages to construction, supervision and final commissioning.
She encouraged district leaders, technical personnel and members of the community to work together in monitoring public projects and reporting suspected cases of corruption or poor workmanship to the relevant authorities.
The legislator further urged contractors to treat government contracts as a responsibility to the public rather than merely an opportunity to make profits. She said contractors who deliberately compromise standards should be held accountable for the consequences of their actions.
She also called on residents to take an active role in monitoring projects in their communities, arguing that citizens are among the key beneficiaries of government programmes and therefore have a legitimate interest in ensuring that public resources are properly utilized.
Hon. Nalongo’s warning comes amid growing calls for stronger accountability and improved supervision of public projects, particularly at the local government level, where communities depend heavily on government-funded infrastructure and services.
She reiterated that transparency, proper supervision and accountability are essential if government programmes are to achieve their intended objectives and improve service delivery to the people of Rubirizi District.
The MP urged all stakeholders to work together to safeguard public resources and ensure that every government project delivers value for money.
