MBARARA CITY – Mbarara city council has secured shillings 500 million from the ministry of works and transport to construct a temporary bridge at Katete.
According to Mayor Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi of Mbarara City Council, the government had promised to provide the city council with 5.7 billion shillings for constructing a permanent bridge at Katete. However, due to the president’s instruction to parliament to reconsider the budget for the 2024/25 financial year, the funds allocated to the city council were withdrawn.
Kakyebezi mentioned that the city is currently searching for a contractor to handle all construction tasks, estimating that the process will be completed within two months.

Bonny Tashobya Karusya, the speaker Mbarara city council, voiced disappointment with the government for initially promising to finance the construction of a permanent bridge at Katete, only to reverse its stance later on. He disclosed that numerous businesses in Katete ward have now halted operations since the council closed the bridge last month, permitting only boda boda riders and pedestrians to pass.
